Cold Spring Suicide Barrier Meeting Wednesday
Six-Foot Barrier Would Prevent Jumpers
Members of the Santa Barbara community with an opinion on the proposed construction of a suicide barrier on Highway 154’s Cold Spring Canyon Bridge are encouraged to attend a meeting on Wednesday, July 25, to weigh in on the matter. A multi-agency task force – including Caltrans, the Glendon Association, the CHP, and the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department – have so far met with much community support for the plan, which would build a six-foot steel safety barrier along the bridge to impede suicidal people from jumping from the bridge.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Faulkner Galley, which is located at 40 E. Anapamu Street.
Currently, the project is estimated for completion in 2010. Forty-three people have committed suicide by jumping off the bridge since it was built in 1963, and 31 of those deaths have occurred within the last 25 years.
