Starting this fall, SBCC will offer a new Creative Writing Certificate program. For info, call 965-0581 or visit Coordinator and English professor David Starkey tells all.

1) What exactly is a Creative Writing Certificate? People compare it to an MFA, but the creative writing concentration doesn’t require a completed BA the way an MFA does. Anyone interested in creative writing is welcome. We will feature advanced courses in fiction, drama, poetry, and nonfiction. Students will be taught by expert instructors [including Indy columnist Starshine Roshell], and will participate in readings, short masterclasses, writing-related internships, and so on.

2) How do you see it fitting with the resources for writers we already have in S.B.? SBCC’s Continuing Education courses in creative writing are always full, and full of energy. We’re hoping to bring some of that enthusiasm to our college credit courses. We’re reaching out to both S.B. City College students and community members who have always wanted to pursue their passion for writing with more rigor and system, but aren’t able to do this as full-time students.

3) What are you most excited about? I love it when other people get excited about creative writing, and we’re already seeing that happen here: phone calls, emails, and people in the community wanting to know about our new classes. This is the first time something like this has been offered in our area.
