On 8/27, the California Fish and Game Commission discussed whether to ban lead ammunition from California condor habitat, less than a month after one of the endangered giant vultures died while undergoing chelation-a treatment to reduce high levels of lead in the blood. The Santa Barbara Audubon Society supported the proposed ban, while hunters’ groups opposed it, calling lead bullets cheap and effective. The matter will return to the commission’s agenda October 11-12 in Concord.
