In the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings, UC Santa Barbara is one of many local schools that are incorporating mental health outreach information and campus safety in their new-student orientations. UCSB included information about the Virginia Tech massacre so that, according to Associate Dean of Students Debbie Fleming, parents will be aware that such risks exist on university campuses. UCSB aims to promote the philosophy that new students should be “proactive in safeguarding their own emotional and physical health.”
