Composer Hrishikesh Hirway’s (aka The One AM Radio) This Too Will Pass is yet another coffeehouse burner brewed in isolation, misery, and suffering. Unlike his contemporaries (Kings of Convenience, Iron & Wine), The One AM Radio evokes feelings of emptiness and sterility through instrumental forays uncommon to the indie genre. “Mercury” highlights the bass clarinet in ways I haven’t heard since my high school honors band. But what The One AM Radio boasts in arrangements he lacks in lyricism. Hirway’s characters seem to miss the lessons that arise from heartbreak. Lyrical illusions of depressive grandeur are overly verbose and only harnessed by the thin, pastoral honesty that result when a person truly hits rock bottom.
