Despite persistent inquiries about her sympathies, congressmember and Democratic Party superdelegate Lois Capps is remaining steadfastly non-committal about which presidential hopeful she’ll be supporting in her party’s primary showdown. Capps enjoys strong connections to both campaigns. Her daughter Laura worked in the White House under Bill Clinton, and both Clintons campaigned actively on behalf of Capps and her late husband Walter Capps in their congressional campaigns. At the same time, however, Capps’ daughter is currently married to Barack Obama’s campaign spokesperson Bill Burton.

Although the Democratic Party leadership of the Central Coast has strongly supported Hillary Clinton, Obama won the popular vote-both in Santa Barbara County and in Capps’ Congressional district by a few percentage points. While Obama leads Clinton on both popular votes and delegate counts, it remains statistically impossible that either candidate can win enough of either to sew up their party’s nomination by this summer’s presidential convention. In that case, superdelegates, such as Capps, will be called upon to decide.
