Worker Bee Cafe
A Look at This Unassuming Diner Great for Breakfast and Lunch
Where: 973 Linden Ave., Carpinteria; 745-1828.
What: Flavor-packed breakfast and lunch in an unassuming diner-like space featuring a hardworking bee mascot.
How Much: Complete egg breakfasts $6.55-$10.75, sandwiches and burgers with fries $7.75-$10.75.
The Dish: Playful bee caricatures decorate the two vibrant Worker Bee menus that wish breakfast visitors “Good Morning” and lunch guests “Good Afternoon.” Swarms, Queen Cakes, and the Beehive are names for hearty breakfast treats of scrambles, plate-sized pancakes, and golden waffles. Thick Texas-style sliced egg-battered French toast ($4.65) is served buttered and straight from the frying pan in a decadently delicious fashion. Egg breakfasts and chicken fried steak are plated alongside the customer’s choice of hash browns, home fries, and toast or a biscuit. The afternoon menu is quartered among classic chopped deli salads, sandwiches, burgers, and “bee-licious” chicken specialties. A bacon bee burger (1/3-pound ground sirloin with a grilled green chile) and the super bee basket (chicken tenders) will have tongues twisting and salivating at the same time. The compact diner space and kitchen-facing counter is fitting for the small-town feel in downtown Carpinteria.
