Where: 915 Linden Ave., Carpinteria; 566-5954; chamomilecafe.com.

What: A quaint downtown Carpinteria breakfast, lunch, and dinner spot serving traditional and vegan comfort foods and baked goods from scratch.

How Much: Breakfast entrees $6.95-$11.95, dinner entrees $14-$18.

The Dish: Chamomile Cafe’s extensive selection of vegetarian and vegan options is full of wholesome treats that meat lovers should approach with an open mind. No need to worry about freshness here as each ingredient is chosen carefully and organic when in season. All baked goods, from pastries to handmade organic whole wheat, sourdough, or ciabatta bread, are made from scratch on the premises daily. Vegan tofu ranchero is a healthy twist on a hearty traditional dish for breakfast, and melt-in-your-mouth pumpkin pecan pancakes are a Sunday brunch staple. Egg white and tofu substitutions are available for all breakfast dishes. Lunch offers sandwiches, paninis, and crisp tossed salads sprinkled with tofu or blackened wild salmon. The dinner menu is vegan except for the wild salmon (meaning none of the menu items contain animal products). Curried pakoras (tempura-style veggies) with handmade chutney and a Thai-inspired curry tofu panang are internationally inspired. Pleasantly surprise friends who normally steer clear of the healthy stuff and treat them to Chamomile.
