After a prickly exchange pitting Councilmember Dale Francisco against the rest of his council colleagues, the Santa Barbara City Council endorsed a letter opposing new oil leasing in federal waters off Santa Barbara. Currently, the federal Minerals Management Service is contemplating new oil leasing in the Santa Barbara Channel. Francisco demanded to know why councilmembers Das Williams and Helene Schneider waited until the deadline for comment had almost arrived for council consideration when they’d had seven months to discuss the matter.


Nobel prize-winning UCSB professor Walter Kohn endorsed Santa Barbara City Council candidate David Pritchett in his bid for office. Pritchett, a longtime Democrat serving on the city’s Transportation and Circulation Committee, has openly feuded with party leaders for not endorsing him. [In recent years, Kohn has emphatically embraced solar energy technology.]
