Detectives booked the suspect in a 13-year-old fraud case into Santa Barbara County Jail on 9/17. Timothy Ray Weaver, 50, is accused of bilking a Santa Barbara resident out of $17,500 in cash and materials during a home remodel scam. After a felony warrant was issued for Weaver’s arrest, he allegedly went on the lam, apparently traveling up and down California and racking up a growing number of arrest warrants for similar crimes.

Joel Angeles-chief of staff to AssemblyÂ-member Audra Strickland, who also worked on Republican state Senator Tony Strickland’s campaign-is in the midst of a misdemeanor battery trial for his actions outside a Strickland fundraiser last July. Witnesses have alleged that Angeles knocked one demonstrator down to the ground and declared that the sidewalk was “reserved for Republicans.” His trial began 9/24.

A man was arrested 9/21 for accosting a 13-year-old girl on the 100 block of West Mission Street. The girl reportedly was walking to the Daily Grind when the suspect confronted her and, after pinning her against a wall, solicited sexual acts. The girl escaped and immediately notified the authorities. Police were able to identify the suspect nearby and arrested him on charges of attempted child molestation, false imprisonment, and child annoying.

A total of 19 drivers were reportedly arrested for DUIs this week by multiple law enforcement agencies. SBPD officers arrested 11 motorists for driving under the influence, and a multi-jurisdictional task force in Isla Vista (including UCSB police and the Santa Barbara division of the CHP) booked eight people at the beginning of UCSB’s move-in weekend.

A member of the Ross store’s cleaning crew, Luis Nunez Rodriguez, 23, was arrested 9/16 for grand theft. A surveillance video revealed that the closing shift mistakenly had left three bags of cash on a register and that Rodriguez, upon discovering the money, wrapped the bags in a floor mat and exited the store. After being questioned by police, Rodriguez eventually confessed and led officers to the money, $500 of which was missing, hidden in the company work van.

After falling and injuring his arm and leg to the point that he could no longer continue hiking, a 35-year-old man had to be transported on a stretcher from Tangerine Falls around 2:45 p.m. on 9/19. Rescuers, which included agents from Montecito Fire as well as the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, delivered the man to a helicopter, which ultimately transferred him to an ambulance that took him to the hospital.

Rescue crews working with the Sheriff’s Department airlifted a hunter from near Cuyama Peak around 8:45 a.m. on 9/19, after he slipped off a cliff and fell approximately 150 feet. While he eventually was transferred to an ambulance and taken for treatment, rescue workers then hiked a mile up the mountain to assist two other hunters, who had since climbed down the cliff to help the injured man.

In an effort to bolster its ranks of volunteers, the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team has joined the list of organizations posting on the United Way of Santa Barbara County’s Web site, volunteer.united-e-way.org/uwsbc. Those who join are trained to assist crews with such emergencies as high-angle rock rescues, car accidents, downed aircrafts, water rescues, and searching for lost hikers.
