It might seem hypocritical to drive up the coast to celebrate an environmental holiday that’s rooted in Santa Barbara, but the Central Coast Vineyard Team is putting on quite the Earth Day Food & Wine Festival, April 16-18. The fourth annual festival, which is a zero-waste event with solar-powered entertainment stages, offers a variety of events that show the Sustainability in Practice (SIP) Certification Program (sipthegoodlife.org) in action. SIP provides a way for vineyards to verify their attention to integrated farming practices through a commitment to environmental stewardship, equitable treatment of employees, and economic stability. Saturday’s main event at the Santa Margarita Ranch is a blowout featuring more than 200 purveyors of award-winning, sustainably produced food and wine, from Tablas Creek and Villa Creek to Chronic Cellars and Halter Ranch, from 15 Degrees C Wine Shop & Bar and the Brown Butter Cookie Company to Artisan and Windrose Farms.
