Your grilling might kill, but don’t let your fingers get too sticky from that secret sauce before shipping off your best recipes to The Independent in order to enter our first ever Sizzling Summer BBQ Contest. You now have until May 10 to submit your recipes (ingredients-only is okay for the secret saucers) by emailing; finalists will be selected from those entries. The five categories are entrée (both professional and amateur divisions), side dish (same split; grilled or simply BBQ-complementary), and summer cocktail (that’s pro-am). Not only will you win bragging rights and prominent mention in The Indy, but you’ll also score prizes provided by our generous sponsors Whole Foods, Kingsford Charcoal, Chopin Vodka, 10 Cane Rum, and Rancho San Julian Beef. Even if you don’t enter, do plan to attend the public judging of our finalists on Thursday, May 20, 5:30–7:30 p.m., at Whole Foods (3761 State Street). That’s where our stellar judging panel—emceed by Restaurant Guy John Dickson and featuring John Jurey of Whole Foods, Krista Harris of Edible Santa Barbara, Elizabeth Poett of Rancho San Julian Beef, and yours truly—will describe the food so well your mouth will no doubt water. A public opportunity to taste the winners’ recipes will occur on June 3, with more details to follow.
