Golden lion tamarin
Katie Clemons

A golden lion tamarin was born at the Santa Barbara Zoo on 5/14. The baby—currently the size of a C-battery—brings the number of tamarins at the zoo to five. While it’s not slated to be introduced to the wild, zoo officials said the baby’s birth is encouraging as it draws attention to the species’ highly endangered status. The small monkeys, which grow to be 10 inches tall and weigh a pound, live in Brazil’s coastal rainforests, but more than 99 percent of their habitat has been cut down for agriculture or housing.
