More than 1,000 people collected 1.7 tons of trash from Santa Barbara beaches and creeks during Coastal Cleanup Day on 9/25. The local event coincided with the statewide effort that last year saw 70,000 Californians cleaning up more than 800 sites and collecting more than a million pounds of trash and recyclables. Fanning out over 28 sites in the county, area volunteers found a number of odd items including a 140-pound car axle, two pregnancy tests, a full-size raft, and a wooden “vampire stake.”
