Faced with rising enrollment pressures and limited funds for campus expansion, the University of California (UC) system is testing the waters of online undergraduate instruction by calling on interested faculty to take part in an intensive, two-year pilot project. The UC Office of the President announced on 11/1 that as many as 25 for-credit courses will be taught as part of the trial run, with the first courses expected to be officially offered by January 2012. Faculty will be heavily involved in every step of the process, said a UC spokesperson, and are invited to submit letters of intent by 12/13 detailing what course they propose to develop and teach. Around 1,200 online courses were offered through the UC Extension programs in 2009-10, but while the majority of the extension courses offer transferrable credit, few have UC credit.
