County Fire

[UPDATE, 6:09 p.m.]: Both lanes of Highway 154 are now open.

[UPDATE, 3:13 p.m.]: Captain David Sadecki with the County Fire Department reports crews are working in steep, rocky terrain to douse a 1/4-acre brushfire on the east side of Highway 154 between Old San Marcos Road and San Antonio Creek Road. Three county engines, three Forest Service engines, and CHP personnel are on the scene. Air units have been called off as it appears the blaze is close to full containment.

All three cars involved in the head-on collision caught fire, said Sadecki. A total of six people — two from each vehicle — were transported to the hospital. Four suffered moderate injuries, and two have minor injuries. All escaped their vehicles before the cars caught flame.

Highway 154 is closed in both directions and will remain so for at least another hour.

[ORIGINAL REPORT]: A three-car accident on Highway 154 at around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon sparked a small fire in the vegetation near the Windy Gap area. Scanner chatter indicates a white truck flipped over, and four people have been transported to the hospital with injuries. The fire appears nearly contained, but air support crews are on their way to assist with water drops.

Fire officials have so far been unavailable for comment.
