Week in Sports and Upcoming Events
TOP SPORTING EVENTS: OCTOBER 21-NOVEMBER 1
The 52nd Big Game will have an early 6 p.m. kickoff today at San Marcos High’s Warkentin Stadium. The Santa Barbara Dons bring a 3-3 record into their Channel League football opener. The Royals (1-6) lost their league opener to Buena last week, 49-21, while the Dons had a bye. Although winless last year, San Marcos made the Dons struggle to pull out a 6-0 victory, tipping the overall record in the series to 28-23 in favor of Santa Barbara.
There are several big games at UCSB this weekend. The Gaucho women’s volleyball team, 4-3 in the Big West, hosts Cal State Fullerton (4-3) tonight and conference leader Long Beach State (6-2) on Saturday night. UC Riverside, which upset the Gaucho men’s soccer team 3-1 earlier in the season, comes into Harder Stadium for an important rematch Saturday night. The Gaucho men’s water polo team, ranked No. 5 in the nation, plays its biggest home game of the year at noon Sunday against USC, the three-time defending national champion.
