TOP SPORTING EVENTS: NOVEMBER 3-22

“Lights, cameras, action” — that call worked for UCSB’s soccer team a month ago, and the Gaucho men hope it works again Friday night, November 4, when they conclude the regular season with a Big West Conference match against Central Coast rival Cal Poly at 7 p.m. It is the national game of the week on the Fox Soccer Channel. The last time the network televised a UCSB game, on October 5, the Gauchos knocked off defending national champion Akron 3-2 in overtime.

It has been an up-and-down journey for the Gauchos. They have been riddled by injuries, and after a 3-2 loss to UC Riverside, they fell to sixth place in the conference with a 2-4 record. Since then, they have won three in a row, including a dramatic 3-2 victory at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday night. The winning goal came with 19 seconds remaining in overtime when a hard shot by UCSB’s Luis Silva found the back of the net. The victory assured the Gauchos a place in next week’s Big West Tournament along with UC Irvine which has clinched the regular-season title, UC Davis and UC Riverside.

Cal Poly defeated the Gauchos 2-1 in San Luis Obispo last month. The winning goal came on a penalty kick in the final minute and added to the heated rivalry between the teams. A capacity crowd of 11,075 attended the match. UCSB will try to top that Friday night, announcing a goal of filling Harder Stadium to its capacity of 16,300.

Silva is one of five seniors to be honored prior to kickoff. The others are James Kiffe, Gaby Okito, Waid Ibrahim, and Tim Pontius.

In other college soccer action, SBCC is poised to capture its first Western State Conference women’s championship. The Vaqueros moved to the inside track with a 2-1 victory over Ventura, ending a nine-game losing skid against the Pirates. Jessica Domenichelli converted a penalty kick, her 25th goal of the season, for the winning margin. The SBCC women play Moorpark at 6 p.m. Friday at La Playa Stadium in their last regular-season home game.

Westmont’s women face top-seeded Point Loma Nazarene on the road Saturday in the Golden State Athletic Conference semifinals. The Warriors blanked Concordia 4-0 in the quarterfinal round. Westmont men’s season ended in the final minute of their playoff game when top-seeded Fresno Pacific scored for a 2-1 victory.

Westmont made some history in women’s volleyball this week by defeating Fresno Pacific for the first time in 17 years. The Warriors host Concordia, the NAIA’s top-ranked team, on Saturday night.

UCSB hosts California and Pacific in men’s water polo this weekend.

Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara High are both in the running for a CIF football playoff berth. They meet Friday night at Peabody Stadium. The playoffs in girls volleyball, boys water polo, and girls tennis start next week.
