TOP SPORTING EVENTS: NOVEMBER 15-27

Dos Pueblos High has swept its way into the CIF/Ford Division 1AA girls volleyball semifinals. The third-seeded Chargers (27-5), who knocked off Redondo and San Clemente without dropping a set, will travel to face second-seeded Los Alamitos (32-3) Tuesday night, November 15. Mater Dei, which upset top-seeded Edison, will face Newport Harbor in the other semifinal.

Bishop Diego and Carpinteria will play host to first-round games in the CIF football playoffs Friday night. Bishop (9-1), the Frontier League champion, is seeded third in the East Valley Division and will face Brentwood (5-5) at La Playa Stadium. Tri-Valley League runner-up Carpinteria (7-3) takes on Templeton (5-5) in the Northwest Division. Dos Pueblos (3-7) won its last three games to finish second in the Channel League and will travel to face top-seeded Arroyo Grande (9-1).

The NCAA Division 1 men’s soccer pairings were announced today, and UCSB earned a bye into the second round Sunday. The Gauchos (14-6-1) will take on the winner of Thursday’s first-round match between Ivy League champion Dartmouth (8-5-4) and Big East also-ran Providence (10-7-1) at 5 p.m. at Harder Stadium. The Gauchos are seeded 15th after UC Irvine defeated them 3-2 in overtime for the Big West championship. Irvine is seeded eighth in the 48-team tournament.

SBCC boasts Western State Conference championships in both men’s and women’s soccer. The Vaqueros will enter the Southern California Regionals on Saturday, their opponents to be named later this week.

There will be four basketball games at UCSB this week – the Gaucho men versus Santa Clara on Tuesday and Westmont on Friday; the Gaucho women going against St. Mary’s on Thursday and Loyola Marymount on Saturday. SBCC will host its annual MTXE (mental toughness / extra effort) women’s basketball tournament Thursday through Saturday.

Runners will want to head to UCSB on Saturday for the 35th annual Turkey Trot. The 5K / 10K event takes place on the Faculty Club lawn on the UCSB campus, directly in front of the lagoon. Registration is open to the public, and all proceeds benefit the Chad Briner Student Staff Development Fund.
