Rincon Classic Postponed
Annual Surf Contest Now On-Call for Next Weekend
Contest Director Chris Keet made the official call last night that the 29th Annual Rinconc Classic will not run this weekend. Though solid surf is in the forecast for this Saturday and Sunday, there is also a good chance that the increase in swell, especially on Saturday, will be joined by wave-fouling south winds and rain.
After discussing the mixed-bag forecast with the Classic’s Advisory Board and the weather-watchers at Surfline.com on Wednesday afternoon, Keet made the decision to hold off running the event and try again next week. “This being the first waiting weekend in the period, it was an easy decision to hold off,” explained Keet in a press release. “The decision was made on behalf of competitors, spectators, community, staff, and sponsors in order to wait for the best possible conditions to hold the storied event.”
The next “waiting weekend” is scheduled for January 28 and 29 and, according to Keet, final word on whether the Classic will run then will be made no later than 7 p.m. on the 25th. “Our official forecasters at Surfline are helping us to make the call and are confident that there will be plenty of activity during the waiting period to score stellar conditions,” said Keet.
