This weekend, Santa Barbara’s most historic venue gets a sweet dose of surf. On Saturday, March 10, the Lobero Theatre (33 E. Canon Perdido St.) opens its doors — and patio — to the 5th Annual Surf Video Contest. Sponsored by Sundance Beach, the yearly collection of S.B.-made shorts has a good home in our wave-happy community, and as such brings out some of the West Coast’s most promising surfers and videographers. Throughout the night there will be plenty of prizes on the line, as well as some stiff competition, but it’s not just the moviemakers who get to walk away with loot. In addition, attendees are invited — and encouraged — to show up early, pre-party in the Lobero’s picturesque courtyard, and score some shweet shwag from all manner of surf and skate-affiliated sponsors. The 5th Annual Surf Video Contest kicks off with a pre-party at 4:30 p.m. Screenings start at 6 p.m. For info, call 963-0761 or visit lobero.com. For a quick rundown of what the night has to offer, check out our list of reasons to “drop in” below.

1. Tubluar Talent: The collection and selection process for this contest is many, many months in the making, meaning that Saturday’s screening will feature only the crème of the short film crop. Also, on board for Saturday’s judging sesh will be all manner of industry pros, from high-profile extreme-sport filmmakers to award-winning surfers.

2. High Stakes: This year, categories are stretched wide, meaning the playing field is wide open for winners. Top prizes include Overall Best Video, Best Surfing Footage, Most Original, Best Cinematography, and the much-coveted Viewer’s Choice.

3. Gnarly Giveaways: Before the event starts, vendors and sponsors will set up tents outside the Lobero and dish out plenty of goodies and games for early arrivers. And the gear up for grabs is legit; Billabong, RVCA, Spy, Hurley, Electric, Quicksilver, and Volcom will all be in attendance.
