The Board will vote on approving his hire at Wednesday evening’s Board meeting.

Banning has served as the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services in the Solana Beach School District since 2007. Prior to serving in that position, he worked as the Director of Human Resources for the Solana Beach School District and as a Middle School Principal and an Elementary School Principal in Fallbrook Union Elementary School District. Banning started his career as a teacher at Niguel Hills Junior High in 1978.

Susan Epstein, President of the Goleta Union School District Board of Trustees, said, “We are very excited to welcome Bill to the District. After an extensive search process, the Board believes his qualifications and character make him a great fit for our District.”

Banning stated, “I’m very pleased to have been selected as the finalist for this position and look forward to contributing to the positive partnerships and outstanding work being done for the children of the community by the District’s teachers, support staff, administrators, and Board of Trustees. I believe my experience and passion for public education will serve the community well.”

Banning will oversee the District’s nine elementary schools that serve 3700 students with an annual budget of $36 million. “His successful experience working in similar districts in San Diego County will be a big asset as the new leader of our District,” said GUSD Trustee Rich Mayer who visited Solana Beach to meet some of the teachers, parents, and administrators who know Banning well.

Banning will be attending the June 13 Board meeting and everyone is welcome to attend. Banning will replace Dr. Kathleen Boomer who is retiring after serving as the Superintendent for seven years. Banning will start July 1. The Board plans to host a welcome reception in the Fall for the community to welcome Banning.
