Brian Bress’s Interventions at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art
Brian Bress is a multimedia artist who uses masks and costumes to create the source material for complex and subtle flatscreen video installations. His work will be exhibited at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art this summer as a series of flatscreens placed strategically around the museum rather than in a single gallery all together. Sunday, July 15 - Sunday, September 30. Call 963-4364 or visit sbma.net.
Laurel Beckman at UCSB’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum and at the Jane Deering Gallery
The big news of the summer is the return of what was known as UCSB’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum, or the AD&A Museum, as the organization prefers to be known. After an initial exhibit of materials relating to the career of architect Cliff May, the AD&A will be using the summer of 2012 to launch its offerings in the visual arts in two locations — on campus in the original University Art Museum building and downtown in the Jane Deering Gallery space on East Canon Perdido Street. In One Minute to Heaven at the Jane Deering Gallery space, UCSB professor of art Laurel Beckman shows seven new video animations that explore the diverse fates of insects and fruit that have been used in laboratory experiments to study the effects of gravity. Alongside the videos, Beckman also exhibits the results of a survey she conducted among writers she knows asking them to reflect on personal sublime experiences they’ve had in public spaces. Shows through Sunday, July 28. Call 893-8000 or visit uam.ucsb.edu.
Mario Ybarra Jr.’s The Tío Collection at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum
Upending conventional ideas about where the art world begins and the family ends, Mario Ybarra’s exhibition will display objects made by and associated with a variety of his uncles. The show examines the family as the cradle of one’s aesthetic sensibility. Sunday, August 5 - Sunday, September 30. Call 966-5373 or visit sbcaf.org.
