Ema Boateng’s spectacular goal midway through the second half enabled UCSB to remain unbeaten in men’s soccer, as the third-ranked Gauchos played to a 1-1 tie against 12th-ranked UCLA on Friday night. Boateng beat three defenders on a 60-yard run down the left side, and he fired the ball past onrushing Bruins goalkeeper Earl Edwards to the far post. The Bruins had taken a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the match on Fernando Monge’s header. Two overtime periods went scoreless in front of a crowd of 7,542 at Harder Stadium.

UCSB (5-0-2) will return to the home pitch on Sunday, September 23, at noon against Harvard. The Crimson is 1-4-1 after a 2-1 defeat at Cal Poly on Friday. The Gaucho women’s team will take the field against San Diego State 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men’s game.

In college women’s volleyball, Westmont takes a 16-2 record into a conference match against visiting San Diego Christian at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 22. The Warriors are ranked No. 5 in the NAIA.
