The City of Santa Barbara, Public Works Department’s contractor, Lash Construction, will begin construction on the Carrillo and Anacapa Street Intersection Traffic Safety Improvements Project, located at the intersection of East Carrillo and Anacapa Streets, on October 11, 2012, and continue through November 21, 2012.

Construction will include the installation of NEW:

  • Signal poles with mast arms over Carrillo Street to improve signal visibility.
  • Pedestrian crosswalk signals.
  • Sidewalk access ramps on Carrillo Street, and
  • Drainage inlets in the 100 block of East Carrillo Street to minimize flooding in the area during rain storms.

During construction, the public and area businesses may expect construction noise due to construction activities and equipment on weekdays, between the hours of 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Intermittent street and traffic lane closures will also be required during work hours and overnight.

The Carrillo/Anacapa Street intersection has been identified as having among the highest number of motor vehicle involved collisions in the City. According to the City Police Department Traffic Collision Records, 62 collisions were reported at the Carrillo/Anacapa intersection between December 31, 2003 and December 31, 2007.

Therefore, the City conducted a study that evaluated existing conditions and developed solutions to enhance safety conditions at the Carrillo/Anacapa intersection. The study results indicated that the two primary collision factors are eastbound traffic running red lights and signal visibility that is compromised by the signal pole location. The Carrillo and Anacapa Intersection Traffic Safety Improvements Project is the solution to improve signal visibility and safety for all modes of transportation.
