Like golfers teeing off from a bunker, the runners in the SBCC Invitational cross country meet will start on the sand Friday (Oct. 12) at Leadbetter Beach. They will finish the races on the grass at Shoreline Park. The women’s race, covering 5 kilometers, starts at 3 p.m., and the men’s 4-miler starts at 4 p.m. Almost 20 community college teams will compete.

In Friday night football, SBCC’s defense will try to stop a high-powered Antelope Valley offense at La Playa Stadium. The host Vaqueros have allowed two touchdowns in their last three games, while the visiting Marauders scored 61 points last week – and lost to Canyons 62-61 in overtime. Santa Barbara has won three straight games and is 2-0 in the American Pacific Conference.

In high school action, Dos Pueblos tries to go to 2-0 in the Channel League at Ventura, while Buena seeks to do the same at San Marcos. Bishop Diego goes for its seventh straight win Saturday night against Santa Paula at La Playa Stadium.
