Eleven hundred and fifty people braved this weekend’s excruciatingly beautiful weather to participate in the Santa Barbara Cancer Center’s 20th annual fundraising walk-a-thon, setting a new record for number of volunteers involved and money raised. The previous record was 1,100, and 66 teams of walkers took part this time as opposed to 28 last year. Thus far, the event has generated $150,000 compared to the $139,000 raised last year. Event organizers attribute the bump in participation to more aggressive social media networking, television advertising, and the ceremonial power of the event’s 20th anniversary.
