Girls Inc. Presents “Strong, Smart and Bold” Awards
The luncheon will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2012, from 11:30am 1:30pm, at the Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort in beautiful Santa Barbara, California. “We’re honored to receive this distinction from Girls Inc,” says Angel Martinez, President and CEO of Deckers. “We share the organization’s focus of preparing young women for leadership roles both within and outside of the workplace, which is why we enable our employees to volunteer there and participate in Girls Inc’s annual ‘Take Our Daughters to Work Day’ event.”
Deckers will be honored for promoting employee volunteering and enabling its employees to give their time at Girls Inc. Each year, Deckers pays its full-time employees to volunteer up to 24 hours and many have taken this opportunity to help young girls through the Girls Inc. Homework Help program and at year-round events. Girls Inc. will also honor Nancy Failing, Perri Harcourt, and Lorraine & Stephanie Wilson for their work with Girls Inc. and youth organizations throughout Santa Barbara.
“Once a week, I sit with groups of young girls after school to provide homework help,” says Janet Baker, volunteer at Girls Inc. and Deckers employee. “It’s nice to see that their schoolwork is completed before they head home for dinner, and it’s more than heartening to see their skills and confidence increase. Meeting time with them quickly becomes the highlight of my week.”
The Luncheon will begin with an address from this year’s Keynote Speaker, humanitarian Marilyn Tam, whose compelling personal and professional story is an inspiring example to young girls everywhere. Tam grew up in poverty as a child laborer in China and went on to become an international business leader who worked in executive roles for global companies, including Nike, Reebok, and Aveda. Marilyn’s story illustrates the importance that support groups can provide to girls and young women, emboldening Girls Inc’s mission to provide programs on economic and financial literacy, leadership and education.
Tickets for the luncheon are $95 each or $950/table. For more information and ticket purchases, call Beth Cleary at (805) 963-4757 ext. 10.
Marilyn Tam is available for interviews prior to the Celebration Luncheon on October 24, 25 26, 29, 30. Please contact Beth Cleary to schedule.
