Santa Barbara’s biggest sporting event, participation-wise, will flood the roads with runners on Saturday morning, November 10. The fourth annual Select Staffing Santa Barbara International Marathon and Half Marathon expects to have 5,000 to 6,000 entries. The will go forth at 7:15 to 7:30 a.m. Several streets along the route will have lane closures, including Modoc Road, La Positas Road, Cliff Drive and Shoreline Drive. While they will have open lanes as well, access will be slowed by traffic control. All lanes will be reopened between 12:45 and 2 p.m.

The marathon helps raise funds for several non-profits including the Community Environmental Council, Sansum Diabetes Research Institute and school athletic programs.

Area high schools have had successful fall sports seasons, and a number of teams are still in the CIF playoffs. The football playoffs open tonight (Fri. Nov. 9) at Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos, while Bishop Diego will be on the road. Dos Pueblos is home Saturday in the boys water polo quarterfinals, and Laguna Blanca hosts a girls volleyball match. See the schedule below.

UCSB will host a pair of women’s volleyball matches this weekend. The Gaucho basketball teams are off to Baton Rouge, La., and Las Vegas tonight. SBCC is staging the Bash by the Beach women’s hoop tournament.

Former L.A. Laker Mike Penberthy and Josh Merrill, a former UCSB standout, will lead the opposing teams in ChallengeBall, a basketball fund-raiser for Providence Hall prep school on Saturday night at Westmont College.
