The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) closed down the commercial market squid fishery on November 21, putting a halt to the culling of calamari from the state’s seas. DFG estimated that the season’s harvest limit, set at 118,000 short tons of squid, had been reached and ended commercial fishing to give the state’s most lucrative sea creatures — valued at over $69 million last season — some time to replenish their numbers.
