Sports Highlights: Jan. 3-8
San Marcos and Santa Barbara High won Channel League basketball road games Wednesday to set up their first showdown of 2013 on Friday night, January 4, at SBHS. The Royals dominated Ventura, 59-40, while the Dons won at Buena, 69-64. Both teams are 1-1 in the league. Dos Pueblos (2-0) will be home Friday against Ventura.
UCSB faces UC Irvine tonight (Thurs., Jan. 3) and Long Beach State on Saturday in Big West men’s basketball games at the Thunderdome. The 4 p.m. game Saturday will be televised on Fox Sports Prime.
The Gaucho men’s volleyball team will host its the annual UCSB Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Among the participating teams is UCLA, coached by John Speraw, the successor to Al Scates, who retired after 50 years as the Bruins’ head coach.
The Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table resumes its weekly press luncheons on Monday, January 7. Basketball and soccer coaches are scheduled to report on their teams.
