Sports Highlights: Feb. 4-12
Lucius Davis to Become a 'Legend of the Dome'
As if the excitement of crosstown rivalries were not reason enough to visit Santa Barbara High’s J.R. Richards Gym this week, for added emphasis, the boys basketball games between the Dons and San Marcos (Tuesday, Feb. 5) and Dos Pueblos (Thursday) will decide the Channel League championship.
Tuesday’s game will break a tie for first place between the Dons and Royals, who are both 7-3 in the league. Dos Pueblos (6-4) still has a shot at the title. In fact, if things fall into place, all three local teams could share the championship when the regular season ends Thursday. They would not have to hold a playoff for positions in the postseason, because they are in different CIF divisions.
In college hoops, the Westmont women, ranked No. 8 on the NAIA poll last week, try to complete a season sweep of No. 4 Vanguard on Tuesday at Murchison Gym. UCSB’s men are home for a pair of Big West games. Former Gaucho great Lucius Davis (1988-92) will be honored as the newest Legend of the ’Dome on Saturday when UCSB faces Pacific. SBCC has designated its double-header against Ventura on Saturday as “Coaches vs. Cancer” games.
