Sports Highlights: April 17-13
Sixteen boys volleyball teams from up and down the state will compete Friday and Saturday (April 19-20) in the Santa Barbara / Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions. All the first-round action will take place on two courts at Santa Barbara High’s J.R. Richards Gym. Among the matches are San Marcos vs. Archbishop Mitty of San Jose at 11 a.m.; Dos Pueblos vs. Buchanan of Clovis at 12:45 p.m.; and Santa Barbara vs. Harvard Westlake at 4:15 p.m. Defending champion Esperanza takes on Bullard of Fresno at 4:15 p.m., while top-seeded Mira Costa opens against Valencia at 11 a.m.
Championship bracket matches will continue at Santa Barbara later Friday and Saturday. The finalists will meet Saturday at 6:15 p.m.
Carpinteria High will host the track and field County Championships on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. There will be 40 races (varsity and frosh-soph) plus field events. Dos Pueblos High distance runner Addi Zerenner and shot putter Stamatia Scarvelis both set girls varsity records in last year’s meet.
In college baseball, UCSB (4-5 in the Big West) tries to make progress in the conference standings at home against Long Beach State (6-3) in a three-game series.
