Sports Highlights: May 7-20
UPDATE: Santa Barbara High will face La Sierra at 6 p.m. Thursday (May 9) in a second-round match of the CIF-SS/Ford Division 2 boys volleyball playoffs at Westmont College’s Murchison Gym. The Dons, who swept San Luis Obispo in the opening round, started practicing at Westmont on Wednesday because a remodeling of J.R. Richards Gym is underway. Three other local schools all drew home matches Thursday – San Marcos and Dos Pueblos, like the Dons in Division 2; and Laguna Blanca in Division 5. If they advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals, only Santa Barbara – if it is paired against Oak Park – would have a home match.
In the Division 1 tennis playoffs, league champion Santa Barbara trades serves with Thousand Oaks on Wednesday.
Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara are playing for the league’s baseball title Tuesday and Thursday. The CIF playoffs in baseball and softball will start next week.
A flock of athletes will compete in the Division 4 track and field preliminaries on Saturday at Carpinteria High.
After winning two-of-three games in Big West baseball for the third week in a row, UCSB (10-8 in the conference) visits Cal State Northridge (14-4) in a crucial series this weekend. The Gauchos will return to their home diamond for a game against Washington State on Monday, May 13.
The Amgen Tour of California cycling race comes through Santa Barbara next week in the middle of its 750-mile trek.
