A small plane experiencing engine problems was forced to make an emergency landing on Highway 101 at around 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. The single-engine Cessna touched down on the southbound side of the highway a mile south of Mariposa Reina near Gaviota, fire officials said, before taxiing off the highway at the El Capitan exit.

Only the pilot was on board, and he walked away without any injuries. No cars were involved, though southbound lanes are currently closed and trafficking is backing up. The plane was on its way to the Santa Barbara Airport but its unclear where it was flying from.
