Campground Closes for Construction Work on Santa Lucia District

Los Padres National Forest officials today announced a temporary closure of the Navajo Flats Campground and OHV trailhead on the Santa Lucia Ranger District to allow construction crews to safely conduct improvements to the area.

This closure begins today, and will be in effect through the end of the year. The Forest Service roads adjacent to Navajo Flats Campground — Red Hill Road (29515), Fernandez Road (28S02) and Navajo Road (29502) — will remain open to vehicle traffic during this time.

Crews will be improving the parking lot at the campground and constructing nearly 2,000 feet of pipe fencing to better separate OHV traffic from the parking area. In addition, new picnic tables and pedestal barbeques will be installed. The campground will also be getting a new entrance sign.

“These improvements were promoted and supported by the OHV community,” said Santa Lucia District Ranger Kathleen Phelps. “It’s important that we have the cooperation of the public in staying out of Navajo Flats so we can accomplish this work in a timely manner.”

Members of the public are reminded that they should always call ahead to the district office for the latest conditions and consult the National Weather Service for current weather forecasts.
