Sheriff’s officials have released little information on the traffic collision Monday evening that killed a woman and badly hurt an infant she was pushing across Cathedral Oaks Road in a stroller. The 20-month-old baby boy is in critical but stable condition, said Sheriff’s spokesperson Kelly Hoover, and the identity of the woman — who was not the child’s mother — has not been released pending notification of her family. She was fatally injured in the collision and declared dead at the scene.

“The driver of the car is an 18-year-old Goleta resident,” said Hoover in a prepared statement. “No further details regarding the accident are being released at this time.”

Following news of the incident, Goleta Mayor Roger Aceves issued a statement. “Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragic accident,” he said. “Our thoughts are with the young child who was injured. We pray for a quick recovery. We also understand the burden borne by the driver. Our hope is that our community will come together to support those who have lost a loved one and a friend. Our prayers are with the families and friends today.”

A long-stewing project to install pedestrian safety devices along the crosswalk at the intersection of Cathedral Oaks Road and Santa Marguerita Drive — blinking lights, curb extensions, and a median curb — will be put out to bid in December with construction expected to start later in the winter, according to the City of Goleta’s website. The council is scheduled to hear an update on the project at its December 17 meeting.
