A man jumped to his death from a Goleta freeway overpass Monday morning after allegedly stabbing his business partner shortly before, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Thomas Hutchison, 66, reportedly broke into Rubel Trevino’s house on the 600 block of Mayrum Street, near the Turnpike Shopping Center in Goleta, and began to stab Trevino while he was asleep. Trevino, 56, escaped and ran outside for help, while Hutchison fled. About 15 minutes later, Hutchison jumped off of the Winchester overpass after Sheriff’s deputies arrived, landing on the northbound shoulder of Highway 101, said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, Kelly Hoover. He was declared dead at the scene. Trevino was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and is now recovering.

According to the Better Business Bureau, Trevino and Hutchison worked together for a company called About the Children, which the bureau classifies as specializing in legal document assistance and the company’s own website describes as “a parental advocate group.” Trevino is listed as the owner and Hutchison as the principal of the company, which the bureau states started in 2001 and is based in Goleta. The company is not BBB-accredited and was given a “C+” rating — low marks for accruing 85 complaints in the last three years but high marks for responding to the complaints, resolving the complaints, and operating for a long time.
