Things seem to be looking up for Ninette Paloma — and not just her students. The mastermind and head instructor behind the Santa Barbara Centre for Aerial Arts has been making some pretty big leaps in the last few years, leaps that have included moving into a larger studio, expanding her exquisite aerial dance company, and now, creating the first Contemporary Floor to Air Festival, which takes place throughout Santa Barbara this February. The concept is simple enough: eight aerial dance companies from all over the globe; five days of workshops at S.B. Centre for Aerial Arts’ home base; three “soirées” for dancers; and one gala public performance, slated to take place at the Lobero Theatre on March 1. Whether or not you’ve caught Paloma and her dancers in action — using suspended-in-air apparatus like trapeze, fabrics, lyra, corde lisse, and tightwire — Floor to Air’s grand finale will be a must-see. Just be sure to keep your eyes on the sky. At various locations, Sunday, February 23 - Sunday, March 2. Call 284-8785 or visit sbaerial.com.
