Congresswoman Lois Capps has awarded Organic Soup Kitchen’s executive director Anthony Carroccio a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for his dedication to Santa Barbara veterans, in recognition of outstanding and invaluable service to the community.

In 2013, Organic Soup Kitchen’s veterans program served 600 meals per month at Santa Barbara’s Veterans Memorial Building, with 500 veterans in attendance at their Veterans Day celebration, at which Lois Capps was present. In 2014, Organic Soup Kitchen plans to expand its offerings to include a meal delivery service for housebound veterans that will operate out of the Veterans Memorial Building kitchen. According to Mr. Carroccio, “Organic Soup Kitchen operates under the assumption that humanity can heal itself when we interact with compassion and concern for each other. We’re proud to be a part of the Santa Barbara community and to receive this terrific award.”

Organic Soup Kitchen is a 501c3 non-profit that has been serving organic meals to disadvantaged communities in the Santa Barbara area since 2009. Their weekly service reaches out beyond the veteran population to include seniors, families, homeless women, and housebound residents of Santa Barbara. They do this by partnering with distinguished local service agencies such as People’s Self-Help Housing, Transition House, Santa Barbara Housing Authority, Common Ground, Santa Barbara Street Medicine, and Women’s Free Health Clinic. Total meals exceed 1,500 per month. The organization also opens up its doors at the Veterans Memorial Building every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, serving both veterans and the broader community.

Organic Soup Kitchen’s philosophy is that no person, regardless of financial status, should have to compromise the quality of food they feed themselves or their family. In support of this mission, Organic Soup Kitchen prepares only fresh, local, organic, plant-based, nutrient-dense foods. The organization’s reach has grown from approximately 4,000 meals served in 2009 to 20,000 in 2013. Projected growth for 2014 is 30,000 meals.
