San Marcos High’s top-ranked volleyball team has lost only one best-of-five match this season. On Tuesday night, April 15, the 19-1 Royals get a chance to avenge that defeat when they host Dos Pueblos in a Channel League match. On Friday and Saturday, the Royals and Chargers will join the Santa Barbara Dons at the SBHS Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions.

City rivalries will be played out this week in baseball and softball, as Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos play a pair of home-and-home games. Carpinteria and Bishop Diego will square off twice in baseball. On Saturday, April 19, Carpinteria will host the oldest high school track and field meet in Southern California, the 95th Russell Cup. It is a showcase for athletes from smaller schools.

UCSB scored some big-time victories last week. The Gaucho volleyball team, by virtue of upsetting BYU last Friday, will host a postseason playoff match for the first time since 2007. Fourth-seeded UCSB will face No. 5 UCLA in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation quarterfinals on Saturday night at Robertson Gym.

In baseball, the Gauchos scored their first series victory over Cal State Fullerton since 2007. After losing the 11-inning opener, 11-9, UCSB edged the Titans by scores of 3-2 and 2-1 to improve to 22-8 overall and 4-5 in the Big West. BYU visits UCSB for a non-conference game today (Mon. Apr. 14).
