Westmont Moves a Step Closer to NAIA World Series
Santa Barbara City College will host a Southern Cal Super Regional baseball series for the first time this weekend at Pershing Park. The Vaqueros (25-13) will face L.A. Mission (25-14) in the best-of-three series, beginning with a 2 pm game on Friday, May 9. SBCC swept its opening series of the regional playoffs against San Bernardino Valley last weekend by scores of 9-3 and 8-2.
Westmont College also had a successful week in the Golden State Athletic Conference baseball tournament. The No. 4-seeded Warriors (38-17) lost their opener to San Diego Christian, the No. 1 seed, but then proceeded to eliminate No. 3 The Master’s and No. 2 Vanguard to earn another matchup against San Diego Christian. Westmont beat the hosts twice, 17-11 and 13-5, to win the title. The Warriors will play in one of nine NAIA Opening Round tournaments next week. The nine winners will join Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho), the host of the NAIA World Series beginning May 23.
UCSB will play its last home series of the baseball season against Cal State Northridge this weekend. The Gauchos need a sweep after dropping three games at UC Irvine last weekend. The Gaucho softball team has a shot at its first Big West championship. It hosts Long Beach State in the last three games of the regular season. The teams are tied for first place in the conference with 13-5 records.
High school baseball and softball teams have two more weeks of league action. League finals in swimming, tennis, and track and field will take place this week.
Special events this week (see the schedule below) include polo and three days of bicycle racing in Buellton and Lompoc. The Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathon field is sold out, but the race expo at the Hotel Corque in Solvang, featuring Mary Decker Slaney, is open to the public.
