National Nurses Week honors nurses with the theme “Nurses Leading the Way”. Santa Barbara County Public Health Department’s Registered Nurses will be honored at the May 6, 2014 Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisor’s meeting.

This year National Nurses Week acknowledges nurses’ vast contributions and how they are leading the way in improving health care and ultimately, the health of the nation. Nurses are recognized for their role as expert clinicians in diverse care settings and as leaders who can dramatically influence the quality of care and overall performance of the healthcare system. Nurses are leading initiatives to increase access to care and improve outcomes by focusing on primary care, prevention, wellness, chronic disease management and the coordination of care among health care providers and community settings.

National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as RN Recognition Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has Registered Nurses that provide exemplary service to the entire community. At the May 6, 2014 Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisor’s meeting, Supervisor Salud Carbajal will present a proclamation recognizing nurses’ commitment toward improving the health care status of members in our community through leadership and expertise.

As the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented, nurses will be more crucial than ever, leading efforts to expand primary care at community-based clinics and deliver more efficient and cost-effective care as members of collaborative health care teams. Public Health Department nurses working in our Health Care Centers and Community Health Programs continue to play a critical role in improving patient outcomes, increasing access to health care, and reducing health care costs in the community. We commend our nurses for their commitment and tireless efforts towards meeting the complex and demanding healthcare needs of our community members.

Please contact Susan Klein-Rothschild to arrange for an interview with a nurse receiving the proclamation at the May 6, 2014 Board of Supervisors Meeting.
