Two Santa Barbara jail inmates and a custody deputy were hurt Monday morning in a traffic accident that involved two Sheriff’s transport vans. According to Santa Maria police, a woman driving a truck eastbound on Betteravia Road ran a red light at the Miller Street intersection and hit one of the vans, which was heading southbound on Miller. The impact sent the Sheriff’s van across the intersection where it struck the other van, which was stopped at the red light and facing northbound on Miller.

The first transport van was occupied by two inmates and a deputy who were all treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries. They have since been released. The deputy driver of the second van was not hurt, and the female truck driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance, but she is expected to make a full recovery.

Santa Maria police said their department’s traffic unit will be citing the woman for running the red light.
