Fall Arts Preview 2014: Classical
From Russia to Rigoletto
CAMA has declared 2014-2015 to be its “Season of the Piano,” and it will be getting off to a strong start with this concert, which features Jean-Efflam Bavouzet as the soloist. Although he is not as well-known here as some of the other artists who will be appearing through CAMA this fall, the Frenchman is currently on a roll, having scored his second Gramophone Award in just four years. This time, the honor took the form of Concerto Recording of the Year 2014 for Prokofiev: Piano Concertos Nos. 1-5 he released on Chandos with the BBC Philharmonic. Bavouzet should be right at home under the baton of Vladimir Jurowski on a program that has him playing the most popular of Prokofiev’s piano concertos, No. 3, and that will also feature “The Noonday Witch” by Antonín Dvořák and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 74, “Pathetique.” The Guardian praised Jurowski and the London Phil’s recent (August 30, 2014) Prom performance as “nothing if not cosmic in scope and intention,” and this stop at the Granada on their North American tour is sure to be one of the most memorable orchestral events of the year. At the Granada Theatre, Thursday, October 9. Call 899-2222 or visit granadasb.org.
