Fall Arts Preview 2014

Theater, Dance, and Visual Art are Back in Season

SAHARA SONGS: Grammy-winning band Tinariwen plays UCSB’s Campbell Hall on Sunday, October 26.

In the culinary world, fall equals bounty. Sure, summer has its champions—tomatoes, berries, melons—but autumn is when the whole crop gives way to more color, texture, and taste than our pantries can typically bear. In many ways, the same can be said for the arts. While some venues burst at the seams during the summer months (Santa Barbara Bowl concerts, I’m looking at you), it’s not until fall that all the disciplines seems to flourish in equal, bountiful harmony. This year, that influx of goodness is bringing all sorts of highlights to the classical, theater, visual art, pop, rock, jazz, and dance calendars. In the following pages, we wade through the philharmonics and the festivals in an attempt to nail down this fall’s truly must-see events. Happy harvest, art lovers.
