The Santa Barbara City Council approved spending $348,000 to construct and install a new “bike station” at the Transit Center by Chapala and Figueroa streets, providing enclosed, secure parking for as many as 30 bicycles at any time. The council’s action came in response to repeated complaints of theft and vandalism by bicyclists who park their bikes by the Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) center as part of their multimodal bike-to-bus journeys to and from work. The station will be modular in design, 10 feet wide, 20 feet long, and 10 feet high. Operations will be handled by the same company running the city’s existing bike station in the Granada Garage. The new module will replace three of the MTD lot’s former bike-storage structures that have fallen into disrepair.
