Mayo's Taqueria Y Carniceria
Jen Villa

Where: 2704 De la Vina Street, 569-1951.

What: Authentic taco shop attached to Mexican market, owned by Mayo Villalpando.

How much? $4-$10 total, with drinks; two-tortilla tacos start at $2.25.

The dish: Easy to walk by because it’s like the afterthought of the adjacent market and butchery, Mayo’s may be the most authentic spot in town-or at least off Milpas Street. The tacos-you order at the market’s check-out counter and then give your receipt to the cooks-can take a while, but they’re perfectly sized (two will do most lunch appetites), covered in refreshing chopped salsa, and served up easily on paper plates. Try the carnitas, of course, but veggie lovers can also hit the rajas con queso, or grilled peppers ‘n’ cheese. Returnees seem to hone in on the tortas and quesadillas. Menudo is also mandatory at Mayo’s; it is rumored to be the best in town every weekend.
