The Dish: Uncle Chen Restaurant in Carpinteria features Szechuan and Mandarin cuisine in a modestly decorated space on Casitas Pass Road. Family-owned and -operated, the restaurant has an appealing all-you-can-eat lunch buffet daily, and a dinner buffet on Friday and Saturday evenings. To-go patrons can also enjoy free delivery for orders that meet the $20 mark. The menu is divided into an assortment of preparations of shrimp, beef, chicken, tofu, pork, and vegetables. Chow mein and pan-fried soft noodles also grace the list, topped with a protein or veggie of choice. Chef’s specials include spicy fish fillets, orange peel shrimp, a variety of sizzling platters, and Szechuan scallops. Choose from 12 different traditional soups, like egg drop or hot and sour, in small or large sizes. One thing is for sure: The indecisive may be intimidated, but the picky will be pleased, with a menu of this size.
