TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JANUARY 27-FEBRUARY 7

UPDATE: The boys soccer match between Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos will start at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. It was originally scheduled at 5 p.m. but has been moved up because of lighting issues at Peabody Stadium.

Expect Cal Poly to have a good following in the Thunderdome on Thursday night (Jan. 28) when the Mustangs clash with the UCSB Gauchos in a meaningful Big West men’s basketball game. Both teams are tied for second in the conference with 5-2 records (Pacific is first at 5-1), throwing some extra spice into their geographical rivalry as the two major colleges on the Central Coast.

UCSB has dominated the Mustangs on its home floor, winning 10 of the last 11, but the competition in the Big West this year is exceedingly tight. In their most recent games, the Gauchos needed a miraculous shot by Orlando Johnson to defeat Cal State Fullerton 85-80 in overtime, while Cal Poly eked out a 73-72 victory over Cal State Northridge.

The Mustangs were picked to finish last in the conference and went 0-5 in November, but they have rallied behind first-year coach Joe Callero to win eight of their last 13 games.

The Gauchos are 10-7 overall. Johnson, whose clutch three-pointer in the final seconds sent the Fullerton game into overtime, is the Big West’s second leading scorer (17.2 points per game) and has scored in double figures in every game.

In women’s basketball, UCSB and Cal Poly will be playing at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo on Thursday night. The last time they met, the Gauchos defeated the Mustangs in the 2009 Big West Tournament championship game. Cal Poly has been outpacing UCSB this season. Led by Kristina Santiago (averaging 21.9 points and 10.4 rebounds in conference play), the Mustangs are 5-2 in the Big West and 12-5 overall, while the Gaucho women are 3-3 and 6-12.

There will be a dynamic soccer match Thursday at Peabody Stadium, where the Santa Barbara High Dons – a remarkable 19-0-1 on the season – face the Dos Pueblos Chargers, the only team to escape defeat against the Dons. They tied 0-0 two weeks ago. Dos Pueblos got through the first round of Channel League without a loss (3-0-2) and could take over first place with an upset victory.

The San Marcos-Santa Barbara girls-boys soccer double-header, postponed by wet grounds earlier in the week, is scheduled to be played Saturday at SBCC’s La Playa Stadium.
